A bleed block is a small cuboid that is inserted into the brake calliper lining shaft instead of the brake linings during the filling or bleeding process of a hydraulic disc brake. This prevents brake fluid or oil from accidentally getting onto the brake pads during bleeding and the pistons being able to pump themselves out of the brake calliper due to the high brake fluid pressure.
So far nothing new, because such bleed blocks are included with every brake manufactured in large series. What is new, however, is that these parts are now available in steel. Advantages of the steel bleed block: The conventional plastic bleed blocks are much too soft to be able to reliably judge at the end of the bleeding process whether the brake is really properly vented and has a perfect pressure point. Also the test with built-in pads and disc is less meaningful, because pads are surprisingly soft and compressible. Only when the slave pistons press directly on a very hard, flat block can you really judge whether the brake is air-free.
